What is the purpose?

  1. Provide a judgment-free zone for individuals with disabilities to play, learn, and grow where they are free to communicate using their preferred mode of communication – verbal, sign, low-tech AAC, or high-tech AAC.

  2. Promote communication opportunities for individuals who may use alternative or augmentative communication (AAC) within their communities.

  3. Inclusion. Everyone should feel comfortable being able to play, learn, and grow wherever it is safe. Communication fosters a safe and caring environment.

Who would benefit?
Everyone.

  • Individuals who use augmentative or alternative communication

  • Peers of the AAC user

  • Trusted adults of the AAC user

How would this be used?

  • AAC users can initiate their wants/needs.

  • Users will have the opportunity to communicate with peers and adults without having to carry their high-tech communication devices if they so choose to do.

  • Peers can model language using the communication board.

  • Language can be modeled to help with transitions and expectations.

  • Decrease communication breakdowns/frustrations.
